Soil Amendments

A soil amendment is any material added to soil to improve its physical properties, such as water retention, permeability, drainage, and aeration, ultimately enhancing soil fertility and overall health for better plant growth. Common soil amendments include organic matter, minerals, and chemical substances that address specific soil issues like nutrient deficiency or poor structure.

Terraforma & Soil Ecology

The TerraPod through Terraforma is a solution to reinvigorating soil ecology. It is a bioreactor system installed on-site and inoculated with native microbes adapted to your field conditions and bioregion. Having the equipment on the farm prevents living microbial solutions from being put into dormancy.

Logo saying TERRAFORMA, on the left is a design of pink, blue, and brown dots making the shape of a circle.

Terraforma helps farmers achieve a more profitable agricultural system by improving the biological functionality of soils through:

1) TerraPod: providing diverse, active, and adapted microorganisms to your soil.

2) Consultation: Advising the farmer on the best Regenerative Management Practices to improve their soil’s natural productivity.

The Ground Up: Compost Tea

Compost Teas, Tree Care, Soil Health Analysis & Consultations

“The Ground Up proudly resides in the heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountain region. By using our soil health consulting services and applying our locally made compost tea to keep plants healthy, you will also be doing your part to help restore our local rivers and enhance our beautiful mountain views.”

Compost tea is a nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer made by steeping compost in water.

Benefits include:

Increases soil water retention, improves soil fertility, reduces reliance on chemical pesticides and fertilizers, increases the amount of nutrients available to the plant, speeds the breakdown of toxins, contains higher concentrations of beneficial bacteria and fungus than most solid composts, improves soil’s ability to retain water, and is easily applied.

Sentinel Fertigation & Soil Nitrogen Levels

Logo saying "SENTINELAG" with a helmet decorated with a green leaf

Nitrogen is a primary nutrient required by plants, especially vital as it is a component of chlorophyll and a necessary nutrient for photosynthesis.

Sentinel's platform lets your crop tell you exactly what it needs to reach its potential using imagery, crop data, and trial-backed science. Sentinel Fertigation provides soil nitrogen level tracking, helping to better soil health and improve profit and efficiency.

Biochar

hand holding black charcoal-like substance, biochar

Biochar is a fine-grained, highly porous material that is made from biomass such as agriculture byproducts, forestry residues, and solid waste. Biochar is made by high-heat, low-oxygen processes, i.e. pyrolysis or gasification. (International Biochar Initiative).

Biochar is porous and greatly improves soil’s water holding capacity. Crops grown with biochar may also need less fertilizer as biochar improves the ability of soil to hold onto nutrients. Useful for agricultural productivity, it can also help restore soils that have become too acidic, or contaminated with heavy metals.
