Noxious Weed Management Cost-Share Program

Welcome to Mesa Conservation Districts Noxious Weed Cost-Share Program!

The goal of this program is to provide financial and technical support to private landowners within Mesa Conservation District in the identification, control, and long-term management of noxious weeds on your property!

We can reimbursement you for 50% of costs and labor for removing and treating your eligible noxious weeds.

  • Treatment reimbursements are capped as follows:

  • $125 per acre treated

  • Up to $1,000 for <160 acres

  • Up to $1,250 for 160-320 acres

  • Up to $2,000 for >320 acres

Tamarisk/Russian olive treatment is reimbursable up to $1,750, and NOT determined by acre

Irrigation ditches

  • $125 per 200 ft of ditch

  • All private landowners and irrigation ditch users who manage ditch weeds within the Mesa Conservation District.

    Mesa Conservation District encompasses everything within the yellow boundary on the map. The only exception is a small area within the city of Grand Junction, as shown.

  • All Mesa County List A and B weeds are included.

    Mesa County Noxious Weed List and Management Criteria

  • Treatments must be Colorado State Department of Agriculture-approved and will vary based on weed species.

    Depending on weed species, options can include:

    • Cultural - Changing human habits and behaviors to reduce noxious weeds

    • Mechanical - Physically remove the plant to disrupt plant growth

    • Biological - Introducing living agents, such as insects, grazing animals, and plant diseases, to reduce the weed population

    • Chemical - using herbicides to suppress, kill, or prevent germination of noxious weeds

    1. Fill out and sign the application and guide.

    • A preliminary site visit must be done before an application is approved and will include assistance with filling out the Management Plan. An MCD employee will reach out to schedule a site visit after receiving your application and guide.

  • All applications are subject to review by the Application Review Committee.

    This includes representatives of Mesa Conservation District, RiversEdge West, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the Mesa County Noxious Weed and Pest Management Department. 

Preliminary and Post Treatment On-site visits are required

Preliminary Site Visit: Before an application is approved, you must complete an on-site visit.

  • Identify noxious weed/s

  • Assess the scope and severity of noxious weeds

  • Mapping and photographing the location of areas

  • Staff will also assist with developing the Noxious Weed Management Plan, completing the application, and answering any questions.

Post Treatment Site Visit: Conduct post-treatment follow-up visit to determine outcomes, project success.

  • Conduct post-treatment mapping

  • Capture “after” photos of the treatment
