Consider Turf Replacement…One Step at a TimeAccording to CSU-Extension, lawns and gardens can account for up to 50% of household water use. Retrofitting landscapes with drought-tolerant plants and efficient irrigation can significantly reduce water consumption. Think about keeping turf in areas of your backyard where you and your family or your pets play, relax or entertain, but consider replacing your turf in areas that are already difficult to maintain. Use of Colorado-native or adapted plants in your backyard can reduce irrigation, fertilizer, and maintenance needs. An improved irrigation system can actually save you money in the long run. Use drip irrigation and mulch around higher-water plants to improve efficiency. Remember, as you transition to more native plants, don’t forget to water your trees. Many trees need water to thrive, and sometimes get overlooked as landowners transition to waterwise landscaping. The lawn pictured below is buffalograss. It requires about one-half the water needs of traditional Kentucky bluegrass lawns and grows well in full sun.
